The liberty tree, while being an actual Elm tree in Boston in the years before the Revolution and the site of early colonial meetings and demonstrations, was also a metaphor for the vitality and perseverance of American liberty and union.
Though the original Boston Liberty Tree was cut down by loyalists during the Siege of Boston and used as firewood, the Liberty Tree remained unscathed as a metaphor which quickly spread throughout the colonies during the Revolution.
In this flag the metaphor of the Liberty Tree has suffered the same fate as the actual tree in Boston over two centuries ago --perhaps struck by lightning or just expired after years of natural decay.
